Indian Coffee House (Jabalpur)

Indian Coffee House is an extremely old but beautiful restaurants I have seen and experienced in Jabalpur. I was taken here by my wife, who hails from here. She has visited this place more than 100 times right from her school days and so, when I visit her hometown, she is very eager that we both go to ICH.

There are multiple Indian Coffee House branches in Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh but they are all under same Management and with same structure. I particularly liked the Sadar branch in Jabalpur. On further enquiry, I understood that it is a co-operative society (by name Indian Coffee Workers Co-Operative Society) of it’s workmen who manage and run the show and doesn’t have any external political or financial influence.

So, here I was. The restaurant building looks like it has been constructed during the British rule or thereabouts, same kind of colonial building structure. The ceiling is at quite a distance, very much unlike the houses that you get to see in, say Mumbai. So, it’s a strange relief for me to see that there is some space between my head and the ceiling 🙂

The ceiling fans aren’t running at full speed and I somehow like the typical noise they make. Strange but true ! Very spacious area-wise, I think it could occupy over 100 people in one go. I also found a lot of college-going kids here, they more often than not take the corner rows on both sides.

Although the restaurant name has Coffee in it, do not mistake it for being just a coffee shop. They serve North and South Indian snacks along with full meals as well. The service was good and fast but the waiters aren’t very courteous, may be since it was rush hour, they didn’t have much time with them. Cost-wise, it is very reasonable.

Overall, I liked the overall atmosphere. Visiting this place in coldest month of December and sipping in hot coffee early morning or in the evening, I think, would be a great idea. I have been here 3 times now and in each of my future visits to Jabalpur, I sure want to visit this place.

Besides, I also make it a point to visit all the good things this town has got to offer, including some amazing waterfalls. Click on the below link:
